Firepower - Destroyer (Part 1/3) Video
The destroyer has long been the workhorse of modern navies. Come aboard its latest incarnation, the US Navy's DDG-51 Arleigh Burke. Wearing many hats in the naval theater of operations, from fleet air defense to anti-submarine warfare, its deadly combination of missiles and electronic sensors make it as formidable ship as ever before.

@hotpocketpoison aye, do you know what the Gerald R Ford class carriers main improvements are over they current Nimitz? class? on the outside they both look very similar in layout compared to the difference between our old Invincible class and the new Queen Elizabeth class carriers which is well quite obvious considering they are 3 times bigger for a start.

@DeadMemories03 we ...
@DeadMemories03 we are indeed going through with it. 3 are being built as we speak. if everything goes as planned it will be VERY badass! accompany that with the Gerald R Ford class supercarrier and the F-35C and the naval power of the US and NATO will be undoubtably superior to all? other countries combined.
@hotpocketpoison ...
@hotpocketpoison They are indeed both very good ships personally I still believe that with its advanced radar capabilities it is the superior AA ship but I'm British, proud and very bias =) I will say though if you american's do go ahead and build the Zumwalt class and incorporate the rail gun as planned that will be a ship I will bow down to 440 miles range rail gun shooting a Mach 8 solid boar projectile + ballistic missiles? and a stealth based design. Sounds pretty badass to me.
@DeadMemories03 it ...
@DeadMemories03 it does have slightly better radar range but not enough to really count as a true advantage. the AB class is capable of carrying 4 RIM-162s per cell(384 in total AA mode), meaning it has far? better anti air capabilities as well as anti ground capabilities. it could carry the same number of missiles as the Type 45 class and still have 46 cells left over for up to 46 BGM-109s(and soon the hypersonic ArcLight cruise missile with ranges exceeding 2300miles). they are both good ships.
@hotpocketpoison ...
@hotpocketpoison Arleigh Burke without a doubt has greater ground attack capabilities through its 96 missile cells a large amount of which contain the BGM-109 tomahawk and RGM-84 Harpoon. The type 45 can carry both of the? above but currently doesn't instead it is deployed as a dedicated anti-aircraft vessel, it also has slightly superior air surveillance radar and was designed with stealth aspects giving it a reduced cross section. These are two very different ships in two very different roles.
@DeadMemories03 and ...
@DeadMemories03 and i never said some americans arnt arrogant, but i will not stand idly by while lies are being spread, i will retaliate with facts if need be. the Type 45 has a farther maximum range? before refueling than the AB class but that is its only real advantage.
@ASH6977 You? have ...
@ASH6977 You? have bailed us out a few times n' bein british I do thank you yanks for that but you gotta give it to us we did hold back germany, france and itally for 2 whole years alone, and america did destroy our aviation industry refusing us an IMF lone unless we scrapped plans for the TSR2 because nato were going to buy it over the f-111. Either way we still love you americans here in the UK n' your food is so much nicer than ours lol
@hotpocketpoison ...
@hotpocketpoison not sayin some british people aren't arrogant but so are just as many americans, in some ways the Type 45 is better than the Arleigh Burke and in other ways as you said munitions for example the? Arleigh Burke is better. Anyway some competition is good every so often means when we come together to kick the s**t out of someone else we can prove to each other just how good we are. Respect from us 'Brits' by the way =)
??????????!?
??????????!?
@DeadMemories03 yea ...
@DeadMemories03 yea we seem to always bail there butts? out of trouble lol
@DeadMemories03 the ...
@DeadMemories03 the whole point it, these brits come onto videos about american equipment and claim theres is "better" when they are CLEARLY wrong, i just like to PROVE to them they are? wrong.
@hotpocketpoison ...
@hotpocketpoison Aren't the British and American's meant to be allies? The AB class was first commissioned in 91 of course the type 45 will be an improvement on it in some ways, just as the new Zumwalt class will be. At the end of the day Britain is tiny compared America they always will have a smaller navy, point is when Britain and America come together no country on earth can stand up to them so who cares which one has the most destroyers, they learn from each other they adapt they overcome. ?
@XxGREATxBRITAINxX ...
@XxGREATxBRITAINxX and what are you gaining from that statement? if the Type 45 is able to reload than so is the AB class. which means firing the same volume of munitions as the AB will take twice as long with the Type 45. im sorry, but this does NOT seem like "best" level quality to me? XD
@hotpocketpoison ...
@hotpocketpoison lol I love how opptomistic you are you dim bastard...? never heard of something called 'reloading' it's what people who don't use spears anymore use ;)
@XxGREATxBRITAINxX ...
@XxGREATxBRITAINxX the type 45 destroyer only has 48 missile cells, whereas the Arleigh? Burke class has 96. this means the type 45 would be HALF as effective against land, sea, and air targets. seriously...48 cells is pathetic. not to mention 61 AB class destroyers are in active service, and only 3 45s are in active service...so which one is better again???
@hotpocketpoison Ha ...
@hotpocketpoison Ha you bellend it hasn't even been built yet! it also focus's on land attack, the Type 45 concentrates on ebign? the ebst anti air ship on the planet, it could destroy all the aircraft of south america all by itself... and I'd imagine when all 6 are built it'd give the USAF a challenge too... but let's not go there ;) we're allies so lets just concentrate on giving those rag heads a good bashing together :P
@ayeayeayeaye12 Yea ...
@ayeayeayeaye12 Yea you certainly did make Communist China. When Truman didn't let MacArthur drop 50 nukes on China after they intervened in the Korean War. Now we all have to live with their threat and cyber? theft of superior Western military and commercial designs.
@hotpocketpoison ...
@hotpocketpoison Who are you kidding, the Burg is still better then the Type 45. The modernization of the US navy with new Carriers, Zunwalt, Libery? ... are far beyond anything anyone has.
@XxGREATxBRITAINxX ...
@XxGREATxBRITAINxX actually, the Zumwalt class Destroyer is leaps? and bounds more advanced than even the Type 45.
the navy's gone to ...
the navy's gone to hell. I want the good old days back with Navies fighting at sea and? battleships firing huge cannons that make a lot of noise and look really cool. where have those days gone?
@871yt
Don't ...
@871yt
Don't blame the Navy, blame the PC politicans who forced such change.?
The Royal Navy's ...
The Royal Navy's Type? 45 Destroyer is now the most technologically advanced ship of it's kind in the world! God Save The Queen!
@martinborgen? Well ...
@martinborgen? Well put and well said. I agree 100%.
@franknbeans4761 I ...
@franknbeans4761 I think? we can agree on that conclusion. As someone said "A good goalkeeper needs to luck too".
Paper performance in all honour, but when it comes down to it, the acutal tool is a minor part of the equation. Circumstances and different situations will destroy any plan - no plan survives contact with reality.
@martinborgen AN/ ...
@martinborgen AN/SQR-20 sonar is designed to perform in littoral waters. Hence it's use on Littoral Combat Ships.
But either way, the most US naval engagements would occur in open waters due to the range of naval aircraft and standoff cruise missiles.
However, diesel-electric subs,? especially AIP ones, are very hard to track and locate no matter what.
@franknbeans4761 ...
@franknbeans4761 Also, Diesel-Electric subs are many times more quiet than conventional subs, in addition to being much smaller. When the HMS Gotland's noise level was to be measured at a British measurement station, they complained that the sub failed to pass that day - only after several tries did they manage to locate it. Hence it's really hard to determine if that possible threat is a sub or not. That? said, I would be suprised if the US navy hasn't improved. :)
@franknbeans4761 ...
@franknbeans4761 It's not like the subs? have evolved any during these years either? We're talking littoral waters here, and that's where the sonars have an extremly tough time finding anything - most of these sonars you mention are designed for open waters, and way too powerful to use in shallow waters, where these types of submarines can hide, and where the US navy identified the problem.
@martinborgen And ...
@martinborgen And in 2006 during that incident, the US was not using P-3's? and certainly didn't have the equipment the P-8 will have. And the Virginia class has towed low and high frequency sonar as well. The fleet also didn't have the new LCS with it's newer AN/SQR-20 sonar.
Modern sonobuoys that the US is receiving can even detect families of whales. Not that ASW is easy, but submarines are growing more and more disadvantaged.
